Joanne Shovlin, Psy.D.
Joanne Shovlin is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with over 26 years of experience providing therapy. She specializes in trauma, stress, and loss experienced by first responders, military, and health care workers.
She is certified in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) and has found this modality to be especially effective to reduce nightmares, intrusive thoughts, anger, anxiety and sensory triggers (reaction to sounds, smells, commotion, driving) that the sensory or fight-flight part of the brain has associated with one or more traumas. She is also certified in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for trauma to shift negative beliefs.
Coping based strategies such as grounding, mindfulness and other practical self-guided interventions are woven into therapy as needed. Her style is supportive with direct feedback and education provided to help clients understand their symptoms and reactions while working towards meaningful change. Her primary goal is for clients to feel better, improve symptoms and engage more fully in the relationships and endeavors that they value most.
Dr. Shovlin is available for video telehealth appointments to individuals throughout Virginia.
